Foreign Ministry: Winning UNESCO membership is an achievement that restores the world’s confidence to Iraq

On Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Iraq’s election as a member of the Executive Council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a remarkable achievement. This victory has restored the world’s confidence in Iraq.

Iraq has won membership in the Executive Council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the period of 2023-2027. The announcement was made by the ministry’s spokesman, Ahmed Al-Sahhaf, in a press statement. The aim of this membership is to strengthen Iraq’s position in international forums and to participate in effective diplomacy at the multilateral level. The elections were held on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at the organization’s headquarters in Paris during the 42nd session of the organization’s General Conference, which was held from 7th to 11th November 2023.

He said, “This achievement adds to the series of successes that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has worked towards in restoring national influence in international forums.”

After nearly three decades, Iraq has won membership in the Executive Council of an organization, restoring the world’s confidence in its cultural gains, educational heritage, and overall status. This achievement attests to Iraq’s significant contributions in the fields of education, science, and culture.

He stated, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is grateful for the support of friendly and brotherly countries towards getting a membership in the Executive Council of UNESCO. We confirm that achieving this membership is a triumph for all nations and countries across the globe, and it signifies the progress that Iraq aims to make in enhancing its prominent position at the Arab, Islamic, and international levels.”

In conclusion, he stated, “We extend our congratulations to the brotherly and friendly nations for their successful membership in the Executive Council and other committees of UNESCO. We urge them to work collectively and productively to promote noble human values for the betterment of all people.”
