The discovery of an oil well in the vicinity of the Oasis of Monks in the Bahr Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf depression was made public by Majid Al-Waeli, the governor of Najaf Al-Ashraf, on Tuesday. The oil exploration company and a team of international experts conducted the survey in this exploratory patch, making Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf one of the provinces with substantial oil reserves.
According to a statement obtained by, Al-Waeli stated that “there are indications that have appeared in that area, including fumes and volatile gases, an increase in the temperature of the soil, and the burning of orchards and green areas, which are indications of the presence of an oil well in that area” during the discussions he held with his advisor for administrative units and energy affairs.
The governor directed the establishment of a committee led by Abdul Hussein Al-Shibli, the Advisor for Administrative Units and Energy Affairs, to monitor and keep in touch with the Ministry of Oil and the Oil Exploration Company. The committee’s goals are to expedite the completion of necessary procedures pertaining to the oil field and to provide logistical support to the oil exploration team and relevant ministerial teams.
He added that direct communication with the Ministry of Oil will expedite the preparatory procedures leading to oil production and emphasized that this discovery will bring about a complete economic revolution that will improve the standard of living and financial situation of Najafi citizens.
