Hussein Ali Mardan, a representative of the State of Law Coalition, identified two options for electing a new speaker of parliament today, Thursday. This indicates that the presidency of parliament is only for the Sunni component.
“The constitutional text includes the election of a president for the council by an absolute majority, i.e., half plus one, with 166 votes,” Mardan stated. “Or through the withdrawal of candidates and going toward opening the door for nominations.”
He added, “The Acting Speaker of Parliament, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, is forced to remain in this position due to the continuation of the Sunni dispute and the lack of agreement on a single figure.”
He focused on that “the Sunni powers have not yet settled on the decision of a speaker of the chamber to succeed the excused speaker, Mohammed al-Halbousi.”
He continued, “The State of Law bloc has agreed to nominate one person for the presidency of parliament to prevent the chaos that accompanied previous rounds,” with the Sunni component’s approval.
