Al-Karawi: Al-Sudani Seeking Parliamentary Control and Second Term Backed by Foreign Interests

Baghdad — Hussein al-Karawi, head of the Coordination Body for the Popular Movement for the Belt and Road Initiative, stated on Monday that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani is working to consolidate political influence in parliament and secure a second term in office.

Speaking to dinaropinions.com, al-Karawi claimed that al-Sudani and his political allies are aiming to control two-thirds of parliamentary seats in the next session, a majority that would allow them to elect the president, parliament speaker, and prime minister without external opposition.

“Al-Sudani and his partners are trying to control parliament in the next session and achieve a two-thirds quorum within the council in order to elect the president of the republic, the parliament speaker, and the prime minister,” al-Karawi said.

He added that the push for a second term is being quietly supported by certain domestic political groups that are aligned with the current government’s agenda.

Al-Karawi also accused al-Sudani of using state resources to strengthen his political position ahead of upcoming elections and claimed that both the United States and Israel favor his continued leadership, citing alleged projects signed under his government that they view as beneficial.

According to al-Karawi, al-Sudani continues to coordinate discreetly with key allies to secure parliamentary dominance and international backing for a renewed mandate.

While no official response has been issued from the prime minister’s office, political analysts note that Iraq’s next parliamentary session will be crucial in shaping Baghdad’s internal power balance and determining the country’s foreign policy direction for the coming years.
