Jordan and Iraq Explore Solar Energy Partnership to Power Iraqi Homes

Jordan’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, chaired a meeting of the Energy Partnership Council on Sunday to discuss new investment opportunities in Iraq’s renewable energy sector, with a focus on residential solar power systems.

The meeting followed a proposal from Iraq’s Minister of Trade, Dr. Athir Al-Ghurairi, during the Iraq Investment Forum 2025 held in Baghdad in September. The proposal calls for using Jordan’s expertise in renewable energy to help meet the electricity needs of employees of Iraq’s Ministry of Trade.

Under the plan, the initiative would be guaranteed by the Ministry and implemented through Iraq’s General Company for Construction Materials Trading.

Jordanian Expertise, Iraqi Potential

Minister Al-Kharabsheh said the initiative could serve as a starting point for broader cooperation, potentially expanding across Iraq through coordination with other ministries.

He noted Iraq’s steady progress in boosting renewable energy as part of its total energy mix, emphasizing that Jordan is ready to share its experience and technical know-how for the benefit of both countries.

“This presents a key opportunity for the Jordanian private sector to participate in Iraq’s growing solar energy projects,” Al-Kharabsheh said.

Technical Coordination and Private Sector Role

Amani Al-Azzam, Secretary-General of Jordan’s Ministry of Energy, led technical discussions with private sector representatives to develop implementation mechanisms and explore options for scaling up the initiative.

Several Jordanian private companies expressed strong interest in participating, highlighting the mutual benefits of cross-border cooperation in clean energy development.

Strengthening Regional Energy Ties

The initiative reflects a broader regional push for renewable energy partnerships between Jordan and Iraq. Both countries are working to diversify their energy sources, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and build sustainable power systems capable of supporting long-term economic growth.

If implemented, the project could serve as a model for regional collaboration, blending Jordan’s expertise in solar power with Iraq’s vast potential for renewable energy expansion.
