Iraq announced that its date export revenues for 2024 exceeded half a trillion dinars, strengthening its position among the world’s leading date-producing nations. The Ministry of Agriculture reported that the country exported more than 600,000 tons of dates last year, supported by strong global demand and the more than 600 varieties cultivated across Iraq.

The ministry explained that exports included raw varieties such as Zahdi, in addition to premium commercial types like Medjool, Barhi, Maktoom, and Ashrasi. Major importing countries included China, India, Turkey, Syria, and several European Union markets.

Officials noted that Iraq’s date sector had struggled in previous years due to outdated marketing practices. Current government plans now focus on upgrading packaging standards, improving branding, and exporting dates with a stronger Iraqi identity to raise market value and increase foreign currency returns.

The Ministry of Agriculture also announced new measures to seize foreign dates circulating in local markets, describing them as “smuggled goods” that threaten Iraqi farmers. The move aims to support local production and maintain price stability.

Iraq’s date industry continues to grow, backed by policies promoting farmers, expanding export capacity, and boosting competitiveness in global markets.
