The head of Iraq’s Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Water, MP Faleh al-Khazali, says Turkey is handling the water issue with Iraq in a way that shows control, not cooperation.
He stressed that this situation cannot continue and called for strong diplomatic action to force Turkey to respect Iraq’s water rights.
Speaking to dinaropinions.com, al-Khazali said Turkey’s policy of cutting Iraq’s water share has made the country’s water crisis much worse and added to the daily struggles of ordinary people.
“These actions should not go unanswered,” he said.
Al-Khazali explained that Turkey is still reducing the flow of water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, treating the issue as a matter of power rather than fairness. He said these cuts are already hurting agriculture, damaging the environment, and creating risks for public health.
He urged the federal government to act seriously, using diplomatic pressure and international agreements to protect Iraq’s rightful share of water.
Al-Khazali warned that if the crisis continues, Iraq could face serious consequences, including threats to food security and social stability.
His message was clear: water is not just a political issue — it’s a matter of survival for the country.
