Plans are moving forward to launch fast-track smart solar energy projects to support electricity supply in the outskirts of Baghdad and across Iraq’s provinces.
These projects will be connected to medium-voltage distribution lines, helping reduce energy losses, ease pressure on the power network, and increase available electricity generation ahead of the high-demand summer season.
The plan includes installing smart solar systems in Baghdad’s outskirts and other governorates, with direct connection to medium-voltage networks to improve efficiency and reduce strain on the national grid. More than 120 potential sites have already been identified across the country, paving the way for new investment opportunities.
An economic model based on submitted proposals has been prepared, focusing on competitive implementation costs to ensure rapid execution.
The initiative aims to reduce pressure on the national electricity network and help address ongoing power shortages. Coordination will take place between the National Team for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Projects and the Higher Committee for Coordination between Provinces. Follow-up meetings with provincial governors will be held to finalize implementation mechanisms.
The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani and attended by senior officials, advisers, and representatives involved in energy and provincial coordination.
