Iraq Cuts Solar Energy Import Duties to 5% to Boost Renewable Adoption

Iraq has taken a major step to make solar energy more affordable by sharply cutting customs duties and taxes on key solar system components.

Naseer Karim Qasim announced that Iraq has reduced import duties on important solar equipment from 33% down to just 5%. The move is designed to lower prices and encourage more households, businesses, and public institutions to adopt solar power.

According to Qasim, the decision applies to several essential parts used in solar energy systems. These include solar panels, inverters, electrical cables, and batteries, which together form the core components of most solar installations.

He also revealed that the government is reviewing a technical proposal that could go even further. If approved, the plan would eliminate these customs fees entirely in the future, making solar systems even more accessible to the public.

Officials believe the reduction will significantly cut installation costs and help accelerate the use of renewable energy across the country. The initiative is part of Iraq’s broader effort to diversify its energy sources and reduce pressure on the national electricity grid.

Qasim confirmed that progress is already underway. So far, 535 solar energy systems have been installed across government institutions.

The first stage of the program focused on the education and healthcare sectors. Up to now, 160 schools and 10 health centers have been equipped with solar power systems in Baghdad and several other provinces.

Officials say the rollout will continue in more public institutions as Iraq expands its renewable energy infrastructure nationwide, aiming to provide more reliable electricity while reducing reliance on traditional power sources.V
