Al-Karawi: Sudani's taxes represent an attempt to put the new government in confrontation with the public.

Hussein al-Karawi, head of the Coordinating Committee for the Popular Movement for the Belt and Road Initiative, said Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s recent tax decisions are an attempt to turn public anger against the next government.

Speaking to dinaropinions.com, al-Karawi said raising taxes and customs tariffs by a caretaker government is a clear violation of the constitution. He stressed that financial decisions that directly affect citizens are clearly defined in the constitution and cannot be handled this way.

He said it was surprising that al-Sudani moved ahead with imposing and increasing taxes, knowing that such decisions must be approved by the Council of Representatives under Article 28 of the constitution. Because of that, al-Karawi argued these measures are legally invalid and that Parliament has the authority to cancel and reject them.

Al-Karawi added that al-Sudani has gone beyond his legal powers and ignored established laws and procedures. He said these actions slow progress and push the incoming government into direct conflict with the public by making decisions that hit people’s daily lives and worsen living conditions.
