Trial operations have begun on the first generating unit of the Shams Al-Basra Solar Power Project, the largest solar energy development in Iraq, with a total planned capacity of 1,000 megawatts.
Located in the Artawi (Ratawi) area of Basra Governorate, the project spans roughly 9,000 dunams and consists of four units, each designed to produce 250MW. It is being implemented by TotalEnergies in partnership with Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity as part of broader efforts to diversify the country’s energy mix and expand renewable generation capacity.
Initial synchronization of the first unit has started at 61MW, with output set to gradually increase to its full 250MW capacity. The electricity will be transmitted to the national grid through the New Rumaila and Souq Al-Shuyoukh transmission lines in line with approved technical plans.
According to the Ministry of Electricity, once fully operational the project is expected to enhance grid stability, help meet rising power demand in Basra, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen Iraq’s long-term energy security.
