The Ministry of Transport says several major projects at Grand Faw Port are expected to be finished this year, marking the completion of the first phase of the massive port development in Iraq.
According to Maitham Al-Safi, Director of the Ministry’s Media Office, work is moving forward on schedule to complete key infrastructure projects that are part of this first phase.
One of the most important projects is the submerged tunnel. This tunnel will connect the port to Iraq’s main road network, making it easier for trucks to move goods in and out of the port. It is also expected to help improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in the area.
Al-Safi said work is also progressing on the container yard, another major part of the project. The yard is being prepared with the necessary technical equipment so it can handle large numbers of containers efficiently once the port becomes operational.
He explained that the ministry is following a clear timeline and working closely with construction companies and consulting teams to make sure the remaining projects are completed soon. Finishing these facilities will be a major step toward completing the first phase of Grand Faw Port.
Al-Safi added that the port is considered a strategic project for Iraq. Once fully developed, it is expected to strengthen the country’s role as a key trade route connecting East and West through both sea and land transport networks.
The project is also expected to support the national economy and create many jobs in transport, logistics, and related industries. He noted that once the first phase is complete, it will open the door for the next stages of development, which will expand the port’s facilities and increase its capacity.
