Belgium has given €1.35 million in 2025 to the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) to support mine clearance work in Iraq and Syria.
The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this new funding brings Belgium’s total support for mine action in the two countries to more than €13 million since 2019.
Clearing mines remains a key priority for Belgium’s Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. Landmines and unexploded bombs are still a serious danger to civilians. They block roads, farmland, and water sources. They hurt food production, slow down economic recovery, and make it harder for displaced families to return home and rebuild.
Maxime Prévot, Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation, said mine clearance is about more than just safety. He explained that removing mines helps communities restart their lives — reopen schools, rebuild businesses, and bring local economies back to life.
