Meeting Reviews Tourism Investment Projects Along Tigris River

Iraq’s National Investment Commission (NIC) has held a coordination meeting to advance plans for tourism investment projects along the banks of the Tigris River.

The meeting was chaired by NIC President Haider Mohammed Makkiya and included members of a committee formed under a Diwani Order tasked with overseeing tourism development on riverfront land. Discussions focused on completing the technical, planning, and coordination requirements needed to ensure the best use of Tigris riverbank areas in support of sustainable tourism and economic growth.

Key topics included a review of proposed tourism investment projects, progress on completing procedures for river taxi services on both sides of the river, and the organisation of riverfront sites to support tourism activity and river transportation in line with government policy.

The meeting also examined a plot of land owned by the Ministry of Communications, located on the banks of the Tigris and associated with the Al-Salam State Company. There is an existing proposal to allocate the land to ministry employees. Participants discussed the site’s characteristics, location, available development options, and how it fits into the broader urban and planning vision for the riverfront area.

The committee agreed on several recommendations, including:

  • The Ministry of Communications will submit detailed maps and coordinates for the land plot, along with maps of neighboring sites and related official documents
  • Land-use plans and surrounding area maps will be referred to a specialized consultant to develop an appropriate planning vision
  • Coordination with the Ministry of Water Resources to determine and approve river taxi station locations, ensuring compliance with regulations and alignment with government investment and urban development goals

The meeting reflects ongoing efforts to revitalize riverfront areas, expand tourism infrastructure, and integrate transportation and urban planning along the Tigris River.
