Iraq has completed the longest horizontal oil well ever drilled in the country at the East Baghdad oil field (southern area), marking a major milestone in advanced drilling operations.
The project was executed by the Midland Oil Company in cooperation with the Chinese firm EBS Petroleum (Zhenhua Oil). The horizontal well, designated EBMK-8-1H, reached a total depth of 6,320 metres, including a horizontal section extending 3,535 metres.
According to the Ministry of Oil, the achievement reflects the successful application of advanced horizontal drilling technologies and a high level of technical expertise. The well is part of ongoing efforts to develop national oil fields, increase production capacity, optimize reservoir utilization, and reduce operational costs, while strengthening technical cooperation with international partners.
The ministry described the completion of the well as a significant advancement in Iraq’s drilling capabilities, supporting the implementation of large-scale oil development projects in line with international industry standards.
