Al-Gharabi calls on Parliament to intervene urgently and halt "caretaker" contracts.

MP Bassem al-Gharabi warned on Monday that the caretaker government is continuing to sign what he called “strategic and large” contracts, even though it does not have the full authority to do so.

Speaking to the Information Agency, Al-Gharabi said the current government has gone beyond its legal limits. He explained that under the Constitution and Cabinet rules, a caretaker government is only supposed to handle daily affairs — not make major, long-term decisions.

He said signing big investment contracts at this stage raises serious concerns. According to him, major contracts should only be approved by a fully empowered government that has the confidence of Parliament and is responsible for long-term financial and legal commitments.

Al-Gharabi warned that moving forward with these deals without proper oversight could open the door to questionable agreements. He said this could harm the country’s interests and place heavy financial burdens on future budgets.

He called on the Council of Representatives of Iraq to step in immediately. He urged its committees to stop all current procedures and contracts until the situation is reviewed.

He ended by saying that staying silent would only encourage illegal practices, weaken constitutional institutions, and put public funds at risk.
