Belgium has pledged €1.35 million in 2025 to the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) to help clear landmines in Iraq and Syria.
The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this new support brings Belgium’s total funding for mine action in both countries to more than €13 million since 2019.
Clearing mines is still a top priority for Belgium’s Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. Landmines and leftover explosives from war continue to threaten civilians. They block roads, farmland, and water sources. They hurt farming, slow economic recovery, and make it harder for families to return home and rebuild their lives.
Maxime Prévot, Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation, said removing mines does more than make areas safe. It helps people restart their lives — send children back to school, rebuild businesses, and bring local communities back to normal.
