The Iraqi government has instructed ministries and state institutions to reduce pressure on the national electricity grid by installing solar panels and shifting toward clean energy sources, Environment Minister Hallo Al-Askari said on Monday.
Speaking to dinaropinions.com, Al-Askari said the Ministry of Environment, in coordination with the Central Bank of Iraq, has launched a low-interest loan initiative to help citizens purchase and install solar power systems for their homes. He noted that public demand for the programme has been increasing, reflecting greater awareness of alternative energy solutions amid recurring electricity shortages.
Al-Askari emphasized that expanding the use of clean energy for power generation is essential for protecting the environment and reducing the effects of climate change.
He added that last year caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani directed relevant authorities to allocate land for solar energy projects in Baghdad, during a meeting focused on smart renewable energy management solutions, as part of preparations for the summer of 2026.
