Iraq Launches Smart Grid and E-Billing Project

The Ministry of Electricity has officially started the first phase of its smart transformation and electronic billing project, beginning in selected areas of Baghdad and several other provinces.

According to the Ministry, these areas were chosen after detailed studies of electricity networks, loads, feeders, and subscriber data to make sure the project starts where it can be most effective.

A Ministry spokesperson said the goal of the project is clear: manage electricity loads better, reduce daily consumption, cut losses and waste, and make it easier to collect electricity fees through electronic payments.

In this first phase, the Ministry is rolling out smart meters in selected neighborhoods in Baghdad and other provinces. It also includes electronic payment of electricity bills and better control and organization of high electricity usage.

The Ministry confirmed that more phases of the smart transformation project will be launched step by step in the coming period. Consumers were encouraged to start using electronic payment methods, with officials noting that a plan is already in place to organize loads and improve the collection process.

The spokesperson added that electronic billing will save time and effort, reduce the use of cash, prevent incorrect meter readings, ease pressure on the national power grid, and help people use electricity more efficiently through accurate digital tracking and payment.
