The Iraqi government has taken a mix of economic and development steps, focusing on controlling prices and pushing forward key projects across the country.

The decisions came during a meeting led by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, where officials told local governments to closely monitor markets and stop hoarding, especially with current regional tensions affecting supply and prices.

The message was simple: keep essential goods affordable and prevent traders from exploiting the situation.

On the development side, several major initiatives were approved:

  • Solar systems will be installed in 850 government buildings, combining local funding and international support over six years
  • 101 tree-planting and green belt projects will be launched
  • Clean energy and emissions reduction projects will be expanded under national programs

There were also important administrative steps:

  • Contract responsibilities will shift to the Ministry of Labour following the 2026 budget approval
  • Local authorities have been given 90 days to remove illegal constructions, with costs charged to violators
  • Oversight will continue to ensure rules are properly enforced

The government also reviewed projects in Babil Province, including:

  • A multi-storey parking complex with commercial spaces
  • New market and commercial developments
  • Renovation of a tourist hotel
  • Progress on the Ashur 2 housing project

More commercial projects were approved in Hilla and Abu Ghraq, along with plans for a new investment hospital in Babil.

In addition, governors were told to support students during exam season and to implement the naming of “Lions of Mesopotamia Street” across provinces, celebrating Iraq’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In short, the government is trying to balance two things at once: protect citizens from rising prices and keep development projects moving forward.
