South Gas Company has started a fast-track project in Basra to increase gas production and support electricity supply across the country.

The project is being carried out with State Company for Oil Projects and is part of a wider push by the Ministry of Oil to meet growing energy demand.

In simple terms, the plan will:

  • Add about 600 tonnes per day of liquefied gas
  • Supply around 55 million cubic feet of dry gas daily to power plants
  • Help generate more electricity
  • Reduce gas flaring by making better use of available resources

The gas will come from major oil fields, including Nahr Bin Omar, Majnoon, and North Rumaila, and will be processed and transported to where it’s needed most.

The project will be completed in two quick phases. The first phase includes building a 4.5 km pipeline in just 15 days, followed by a second phase with an additional 4 km extension.

Officials say the work is being done using local expertise and resources, which should speed things up and improve efficiency.

In short, this is a practical step to turn wasted gas into useful energy—helping Iraq produce more electricity and reduce its reliance on imports.
