San Francisco police have arrested a 20-year-old suspect after a firebomb attack outside OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s home.

According to police, the incident happened on Friday when a person threw an incendiary device at a property in the city’s North Beach area. The fire damaged the outside gate, but no one inside the home was hurt.

OpenAI confirmed that everyone is safe and said it is cooperating with investigators.

After the attack, police say the same suspect later moved toward OpenAI’s headquarters and made threats to damage the building. Officers then tracked and arrested him nearby.

At this stage, officials have not shared details about possible charges or a clear motive.

The incident quickly drew attention because of who was targeted and where it happened. It also came during a time when OpenAI and Sam Altman have been under public discussion following recent media reports and internal debates.

Altman later spoke about the attack in a post. He said he normally keeps things private, but shared details in hopes of discouraging similar violence in the future.

He also responded to criticism raised in a recent New Yorker article, calling parts of it misleading and saying people often underestimate how powerful public narratives can be.

Altman admitted he has made mistakes during OpenAI’s rapid growth and said he is sorry for some of the decisions and situations that affected others.

Police say the investigation is still ongoing, and more details may be released as the case develops.
