Iraqi MP Zahraa Luqman has proposed changes to the country’s holiday law—specifically to protect the school system from too many disruptions.

Her proposal aims to amend Official Holidays Law No. 12 of 2024 by adding clear rules for educational institutions.

In simple terms, she wants to limit when schools can be closed.

According to Luqman, schools should not be given emergency holidays unless there is a serious situation like a natural disaster—and that must be confirmed through an official report.

She also suggested that if students miss more than five days of school, the Ministry of Education must act immediately. This could include holding classes on Saturdays or switching to online learning to make up for lost time.

Another key part of her proposal is reducing extra holidays given by local governments. She believes too many local or regional holidays are hurting the consistency of education.

Instead, she wants the power to declare holidays to be mainly in the hands of the central government. The goal is to keep the school calendar more stable and ensure students across the country follow a more unified system.

Overall, the proposal is focused on one thing: keeping education on track and minimizing unnecessary interruptions for students.
