Akkas Gas Field Drilling Operations Begin

Drilling has officially started at the Akkas gas field in Anbar province, marking a big step toward boosting Iraq’s own gas production and supporting electricity generation.

The project has moved into a fast-track first phase, with production expected to reach 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. Later stages are planned to increase output to as much as 400 million standard cubic feet per day.

Once fully developed, the Akkas field is expected to play a key role in supplying locally produced gas to Iraq’s energy sector. This includes fuel for the Anbar combined-cycle power plant and the Akkas power station. The project is also expected to support the national economy and create new jobs.

The field is being developed by Midland Oil Company, working alongside U.S.-based Schlumberger, as part of the Ministry of Oil’s broader plan to grow investment in the gas sector and reduce Iraq’s dependence on imported gas.
