Former Iraqi MP Thaer al-Jubouri is calling on the government to extend customs exemptions for solar energy systems, saying it could help ease Iraq’s ongoing electricity crisis.

Speaking to dinaropinions.com on Saturday, al-Jubouri said the country is unlikely to fully solve its electricity problems anytime soon for many reasons. He warned that the power situation could become even worse in the summer of 2026, with outages already increasing.

Al-Jubouri said solar power could be a strong and practical solution, but the high cost of solar systems keeps many Iraqis from being able to afford them. He urged the government to remove taxes, fees, and other financial requirements on solar equipment so prices can drop and more people can install them.

He also pointed out that Iraq’s climate is ideal for solar energy, as the country receives strong sunlight for most of the year. According to al-Jubouri, making solar systems cheaper would not only help households generate their own electricity but also reduce pressure on the national power grid.

He added that this could also help calm public frustration over the electricity crisis, especially after tens of billions of dollars have already been spent on the sector over the past years without solving the problem
