Al-Kadhimi: 6 candidates for Prime Minister, and Badr and Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq are competing for the position of First Deputy Prime Minister

Former MP Mu’in al-Kadhimi said the race for Iraq’s top political positions is starting to narrow, but key decisions are still pending.

Speaking to dinaropinions.com on Wednesday, al-Kadhimi explained that talks inside the Coordination Framework are ongoing, and the list of candidates for Prime Minister has now been reduced to six names.

He said three of those candidates have already served as prime minister before, while the other three are new options being considered.

At the same time, there is growing competition over the position of First Deputy Speaker of Parliament. According to al-Kadhimi, the contest is mainly between the Badr Organization and Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq.

He noted that the Coordination Framework may announce its nominee for Deputy Speaker even before Parliament’s first session, which is scheduled for the 29th of this month.

Al-Kadhimi also pointed out that if the State of Law Coalition insists on keeping its candidate for prime minister, it is unlikely to put forward a candidate for the deputy speaker position.

He added that the Coordination Framework will only be required to officially nominate its prime minister candidate after the Speaker of Parliament is chosen during the first parliamentary session.

Overall, al-Kadhimi made it clear that negotiations are still active, alliances are being tested, and final decisions will depend on how the first parliamentary session unfolds.
