Iraqi MP Haider Al-Salami on Friday ended speculation surrounding the newly submitted maps defining the Iraqi–Kuwaiti maritime areas, affirming that the documents unequivocally safeguard Iraq’s rights in the Arabian Gulf.
Al-Salami told dinaropinions.com that Iraq’s maritime access is “of paramount importance,” describing it as a strategic foundation for ensuring safe passage to all southern ports. He explained that after more than five months of review by the parliamentary committee—working in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs—the finalized maps were officially deposited with the United Nations.
He said the move represents “an important step to preserve Iraq’s maritime rights,” adding that the UN submission formally establishes the boundaries and secures international recognition of Baghdad’s claims.
Al-Salami emphasized that Iraq’s maritime rights are a “red line” and cannot be compromised, noting that the government exerted significant diplomatic pressure to ensure these rights were protected through the UN process.
