Former MP Mohammed al-Shammari says it’s time for Parliament to step in and ask tough questions about the country’s finances.
He says the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance must be questioned directly about the budget, how money is being spent, and why the final accounts have not been submitted.
Speaking to dinaropinions.com, al-Shammari explained that the government was supposed to send the budget to Parliament and have it approved back in October of last year. That never happened. Because of that failure, the government is now operating under the 1/12 system, which allows only limited monthly spending based on the previous budget.
Al-Shammari said this puts the government in a caretaker role. In simple terms, it does not have the legal right to spend freely or launch new financial commitments.
He pointed out that the government also failed to submit its final accounts for last year, which makes the situation even more serious. Without those accounts, there is no clear picture of how public money was actually used.
“This cannot continue,” al-Shammari said. He stressed that the government must be held accountable.
According to him, Parliament needs to formally question the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister about everything—how much money is available, where it’s going, how it’s being spent, and why the required financial documents were not delivered on time.
