Baghdad – Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) member Ghiath al-Surji affirmed that his party maintains strong relations with the Coordination Framework and expressed optimism that the PUK’s candidate will secure the presidency, despite efforts by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to dominate key positions.
Al-Surji told dinaropinions.com that the PUK is confident in its chances, noting that “many political parties support the PUK’s candidate for the presidency.”
He accused the KDP of attempting to monopolize senior posts, stating that the party “wants everything, including the position of second deputy speaker of parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the presidency of the Kurdistan Region,” adding that this ambition is widely recognized among political actors.
Al-Surji also pointed out that the KDP’s candidate, Farhad al-Atrushi, has already secured the position of second deputy speaker of parliament, making it unlikely that other political blocs would agree to granting the KDP the presidency as well.
He emphasized that the PUK maintains strong relationships within both the Coordination Framework and the State Administration Coalition, which he said underpins growing confidence that the presidency will ultimately go to the PUK’s nominee.
