Al-Tawki: The ground is prepared for the approval of the oil and gas law.

Al-Tawki noted that previous political disputes among parties and blocs had obstructed the law for years. But today, he said, there is a growing mutual understanding among political forces about the need to resolve the issue once and for all.

“There is now broad recognition that this law must serve the national interest — not narrow political or regional agendas,” he added.

🌍 National Impact

Analysts view the potential approval of the Oil and Gas Law as a turning point for Iraq’s energy governance.
The legislation is expected to:

  • Clarify the distribution of oil revenues between Baghdad, the Kurdistan Region, and provinces.
  • Establish legal frameworks for investment and export management.
  • Enhance transparency in oil contracts and revenues.
  • Strengthen trust and cooperation between federal and regional authorities.

🔍 Background

Iraq, which holds the world’s fifth-largest proven oil reserves, has struggled for years with disputes over oil revenue sharing and regional authority.
Passing the Oil and Gas Law would provide the legal and financial clarity needed to attract investment and stabilize national energy policy — both key goals under Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s reform agenda.
