Iraqi security forces have dismantled a counterfeit currency network in an ambush operation east of Wasit Governorate, according to a security source.
The source said intelligence efforts spanning three governorates, including areas in central Iraq, led to the identification of a network involved in counterfeiting and distributing currency in local markets after several days of surveillance.
Two members of the network were arrested late Wednesday in a “well-executed ambush” east of Kut, where they were found in possession of thousands of counterfeit US dollars.
Officials described the operation as the result of exceptional intelligence coordination and confirmed that additional suspects are being pursued. Authorities indicated that broader efforts are ongoing to dismantle organized crime networks involved in counterfeiting and circulating fake foreign and local currencies.
