A senior figure in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) says a deal between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) over the presidency could be announced very soon—possibly within the next two days.
PUK leader Ghiath al-Surji said the two parties have been meeting throughout the past week. According to him, those talks made strong progress toward agreeing on a compromise candidate for the position.
He explained that the name of the candidate and the full details of the agreement are still being kept private for now. The parties want to finish the legal steps first before revealing everything.
Al-Surji also said the Coordination Framework played an important role in helping both sides move forward. He said the group helped bring the leaders in Sulaimaniyah and Erbil closer together without favoring either side. That effort helped break the political stalemate and move the talks to this final stage.
Meanwhile, Mukhtar al-Moussawi, a member of parliament from the Badr Organization, confirmed that the two Kurdish parties have already settled the issue.
He said an official announcement could come sometime this week. If that happens, it would clear the way for forming Iraq’s next government.
