Baghdad calls on Washington to reconsider the sanctions imposed on 21 Iraqi banks

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday that Fouad Hussein, the deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, has urged the United States of America to reevaluate the sanctions imposed on 21 Iraqi banks that help fund food basket items for low-income families.

After the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein’s administration on August 6, 1990, the UN Security Council enacted Resolution No. 661, which imposed an economic embargo on the nation, forcing Iraq to implement the ration card system, popularly known as the “food basket.”
