Diyala Provincial Council announces the resumption of electricity production from the Hamrin Dam for the first time in 5 years

Electricity production has finally resumed at Hamrin Dam, marking a major development for the region after years of توقف.

According to Raad al-Tamimi, the dam has reached about 95% of its capacity following heavy floods at the end of March. This rise in water levels has made it possible to restart the turbines—something that hasn’t happened in five years.

He explained that water flow has increased significantly, reaching around 400 cubic meters per second, which allowed the dam to generate more than 20 megawatts of electricity.

In simple terms, the dam is back to producing power after a long dry period.

For years, low water levels made electricity generation nearly impossible. Now, with the reservoir refilled, the dam is once again contributing to the national grid and helping improve electricity supply in nearby areas.

Al-Tamimi also noted that the dam has the potential to produce even more. Under the right conditions, it could generate over 50 megawatts, depending on how much water is available and how long the turbines can run.

Overall, this is a positive sign for Diyala’s energy situation—showing how improved water levels can directly boost electricity production.
