Egypt, Iraq Facilitate Cross-Border Road Transport

Iraq’s Ministry of Transport has announced new measures with Egypt to make road transport of passengers and goods between the two countries easier.

The decisions came during the first joint technical committee meeting in Cairo on January 13–14, 2026, part of the bilateral road transport agreement signed in Baghdad on January 30, 2025.

Key agreements include:

  • Truck entry: Loaded trucks and refrigerated vehicles can enter without limits, while empty trucks require a permit for each trip. Fees for technical studies are reduced to $150 per trip until July 31, 2026 (down from $300).
  • Length of stay: Trucks may stay up to 14 days in the other country, with procedures in place for extensions.
  • Fuel: Trucks and buses can enter with up to 500 litres of diesel in their tanks.
  • Visas: Drivers must apply for Egyptian entry visas through Iraq’s General Company for Land Transport or General Company for Passenger Transport and Delegations.
  • Documentation: Iraq’s professional truck operating licence will be accepted officially.
  • Official receipts: Drivers must get receipts for all port fees and avoid paying charges without documentation.
  • Cargo handling: All goods must be loaded and unloaded using pallets.
  • Weights: Trucks must carry official weight documents and follow permitted weights and dimensions.
  • Oversized cargo: Non-divisible loads over limits require a special permit under an agreed process.

The ministry said the measures aim to simplify cross-border transport and strengthen cooperation with Egypt, urging Iraqi drivers and transport companies to comply fully to ensure smooth implementation.
