Electricity: A new energy production technology will save the state treasury $4 billion

The Ministry of Electricity said it is getting ready to bring dozens of new power projects into service across different governorates. These projects are expected to add around 15,000 megawatts to Iraq’s national power production in the coming period.

The ministry’s spokesman, Ahmed Musa Al-Abadi, explained that they have been working hard to finish all stalled and delayed projects. Many of the power plants that are still under construction will start operating one after another, which will help increase electricity production and improve the power supply across the country.

Al-Abadi said the ministry has made strong progress on combined cycle projects, which are among the most modern and efficient types of power plants. These stations generate extra electricity using steam without needing more fuel. This technology will bring more power to the grid while keeping costs low.

He also noted that using combined cycle systems will save Iraq a large amount of money that was previously spent on importing gas for electricity production. According to the ministry, these savings could return about four billion dollars to the state treasury.

Al-Abadi added that the ministry recently signed long-term, five-year contracts with Siemens and General Electric. These companies will manufacture around 80% of the new power stations Iraq plans to build. The goal is to raise production and move toward self-sufficiency in several areas.

The two companies will also handle the rehabilitation and maintenance of the power plants after they are launched. This is to make sure the stations continue running at high efficiency, especially during the heavy power demand of the summer months. These efforts are also aimed at overcoming the years of delays and problems in the energy sector so Iraq can achieve a more stable and reliable power supply.
