Electricity company explains reasons for decline in production and supply hours

The Ministry of Electricity announced on Thursday that Iraq’s power production has dropped sharply to 15,000–18,000 megawatts, down from the usual 20,000 megawatts. This decline has reduced electricity supply hours across the northern, central, and southern provinces.

Ministry spokesman Ahmed Moussa Al-Abadi explained that the drop is caused by several material and technical issues. The biggest factor is the reduction in Iranian gas supplies due to ongoing maintenance work. At the same time, several power-generating units have been taken offline for their regular seasonal maintenance ahead of the summer months.

Al-Abadi added that the recent shutdown of the Kormor gas field, following a targeted attack, has also added pressure to the system—especially now, when winter energy demand is at its peak.

He said the ministry expects power supply to improve once gas pumping resumes gradually. He also noted that efforts are underway to diversify fuel sources and increase the use of domestic gas in power plants to strengthen Iraq’s electricity system in the long run.
