Mohammed Al-Khafaji, a member of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, disclosed on Monday that the Council of Representatives’ current legislative session will end on the 9th of this month, and that Article 58 of the Iraqi Constitution permits its extension for an additional month.
He included a proclamation to dinaropinions.com that as per this article, the regulative term can be stretched out in line with the Leader of the Republic, the Head of the state, the Speaker of the Place of Delegates, or 50 delegates, given that the expansion is endorsed by a vote of most of the individuals from the House.
Al-Khafaji explained that the previous period saw repeated postponements in the Council’s sessions and an incomplete agenda, so there is a trend to extend the legislative session from November 9 to December 9 in order to organize the work of Parliament and approve pending laws.
Al-Khafaji said that the extension will give the government another chance to submit the draft of the general budget law for 2025, which was supposed to be submitted before the end of this year. He emphasized how crucial it is for the government to take advantage of this opportunity to avoid the budget delay this year.
