KRG Launches Goptapa Water Project to End Years of Water Shortage in Chamchamal
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has kicked off one of its biggest and most important water projects yet — the Goptapa Water Project — to finally put an end to the long-running water shortage in the Chamchamal district.
This project is part of the KRG’s ninth cabinet plan to improve essential services across the region. Once completed, it will produce 3,400 cubic meters of clean water every hour, bringing safe drinking water to the towns of Chamchamal, Aghjaler, Takiya, and Shorsh, along with 17 nearby villages.
The project comes with a total investment of 114 billion Iraqi dinars and has already reached 20% completion. It includes everything needed to ensure a steady and reliable water supply — a water intake unit, a central pumping station, a treatment plant in Aghjaler, a pumping unit in Qshlakh, and a water reservoir in Takiya.
The main transmission line, which will carry the water from the intake point to Chamchamal, will stretch 58 kilometers long.
Once finished, the Goptapa Water Project is expected to permanently solve the water crisis that has affected people in the area for decades — giving thousands of families consistent access to clean, safe water for the first time in years.
