Iraq: 75% of Development Road Designs Completed — Five-Year Budget Allocation Secured

Baghdad — Nasser Al-Asadi, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Transportation Affairs, announced that the detailed designs for Iraq’s Development Road project have reached an advanced completion stage, with approximately 75% of the design work finalized.

In a statement on Tuesday, Al-Asadi explained that the remaining phase involves contracting with a specialized consulting firm to review the technical and engineering details before full-scale implementation begins.

Al-Asadi highlighted that field work is actively underway, particularly at the Grand Faw Port, where five key port projects are progressing as part of the larger Development Road initiative.

He added that the railway and expressway components of the project are closely tied to these port developments, pending final review and validation of their construction and engineering plans by the designated consultant.

International Companies to Lead Implementation

According to Al-Asadi, Iraq will invite major international companies to take the lead in executing the project, citing the need for advanced technical expertise and modern infrastructure technology.

He noted that local companies will also participate, ensuring domestic involvement and capacity-building within Iraq’s construction and engineering sectors.

Funding Secured for Five Years

On the financial side, Al-Asadi confirmed that the national budget has allocated funding for the Development Road project over a five-year period, ensuring sustained financial support for one of Iraq’s most strategic infrastructure programs.

Strategic Vision

The Development Road, a cornerstone of Iraq’s economic diversification strategy, is designed to connect the Grand Faw Port in Basra with Turkey and Europe through a modern network of highways and railways. Once completed, it is expected to transform Iraq into a key regional transit hub, boosting trade, logistics, and investment opportunities across multiple sectors.
