Iraq attracted $102bn Investments over Past Three Years

Baghdad — The National Investment Commission (NIC), chaired by Dr. Haider Mohammed Makiya, convened a wide-ranging meeting in Baghdad bringing together political analysts, journalists, and media figures to highlight Iraq’s recent investment milestones and outline its future roadmap.

Dr. Makiya announced that Iraq attracted $102 billion in total investments over the past three years — including $69 billion in foreign and $33 billion in domestic investments. These projects span critical sectors such as energy, renewable energy, housing, industry, agriculture, tourism, and services, with major participation from international companies.

Sustainable Growth and Green Projects

The NIC’s current portfolio features several sustainability-driven initiatives, including:

  • Solar and wind power projects to expand Iraq’s renewable energy capacity.
  • Waste-to-energy systems and green/blue hydrogen production facilities.
  • The Baghdad Forests Sustainable Project, which transforms underused city spaces into green zones using drought-resistant trees and advanced treated-water irrigation systems — enhancing air quality and ecological balance.

Strategic Roadmap Ahead

Dr. Makiya also presented two upcoming flagship projects:

  • The Silica Sand Investment Project, designed to strengthen Iraq’s domestic manufacturing industries.
  • The Blue Ammonia Project, a major clean-energy venture aimed at supporting Iraq’s low-carbon transition and diversifying national income sources.

Open Dialogue and Transparency

During the session, participants discussed project timelines, financing frameworks, infrastructure readiness, and the private sector’s role in accelerating investment.

Dr. Makiya concluded by emphasizing the media’s vital role as a partner in promoting transparency and public awareness, reaffirming the NIC’s dedication to open communication and sustainable national development.

“True development is built on trust, dialogue, and shared responsibility,” he said, thanking the media for helping to convey accurate information to citizens.
