The Ministry of Electricity Iraq announced on Friday significant progress in regional electricity interconnection projects aimed at strengthening the country’s power supply ahead of the summer peak demand season.
Electricity ministry spokesman Ahmed Moussa stated that the Iraq–Gulf electricity interconnection project has reached 95% completion and is nearing final operational procedures. The project is expected to enter service in April, providing about 500 megawatts in its first phase.
He added that the electricity interconnection with Turkey, which had previously been operational, is now fully completed and will be reactivated with the start of the summer peak load season. Meanwhile, the interconnection project with Jordan is continuing under its first phase, with preparations underway to expand it into a second phase in the future.
Despite these developments, the ministry acknowledged that the power system still faces challenges due to a shortfall of about six million cubic meters of gas supplies, which is affecting electricity generation capacity. However, officials emphasized that the ministry’s summer preparedness plan is moving forward, aiming to ensure power stations operate at the highest possible efficiency to meet the expected increase in electricity demand.
