Italy is increasing its support for refugees in Iraq with a new contribution.

The funding, provided through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, will help UNHCR support refugees and asylum seekers across the country.

The focus is on providing legal help. This includes advice, legal representation, and support for people at risk of detention or deportation. It also helps refugees deal with issues like getting official documents.

The project also supports Syrian refugees who want to return home safely and voluntarily.

Italy’s ambassador to Iraq, Niccolò Fontana, said his country remains committed to helping vulnerable communities and working closely with UNHCR.

This builds on earlier support. In 2025, Italy helped UNHCR provide legal services to about 5,000 refugees and cash assistance to around 1,000 families.

According to Pauline Fresneau, Italy’s role has been key in helping refugees find long-term solutions and rebuild their lives.

Iraq is currently hosting more than 350,000 refugees and asylum seekers, most of them from Syria. While some are choosing to return home, many still depend on continued support to live and work in Iraq.
