Karkouchi: Prolonging the presidential election process opens the door to foreign interference.

Imran al-Karkoushi, a member of the State of Law Coalition, warned that delays in deciding Iraq’s top leadership positions could invite more foreign interference in the country’s internal politics.

Speaking to dinaropinions.com, al-Karkoushi said the political scene — especially among Sunni parties — is still unclear and divided. He explained that Sunni blocs are struggling to agree on a single candidate for the position of Speaker of Parliament and are still searching for a consensus figure.

“There are several names being discussed,” he said, “but it looks like the Sunni parties will need more time before they can agree on one candidate.”

Al-Karkoushi stressed that dragging out decisions on the Speaker of Parliament — and the other presidencies as well — creates space for external pressure and interference to influence the process.

He also ruled out the possibility of Mohammed al-Halbousi returning as Speaker, saying his chances are very weak and difficult to achieve.

His comments reflect growing concern that political delays are not just internal problems, but risks that could expose Iraq’s decision-making to outside influence if left unresolved.
