Baghdad, Nov. 6 — Member of Parliament Ali Al-Lami said Thursday that Iraq is on track to become one of the Middle East’s leading natural gas exporters within the next three years, as development of key gas fields accelerates.
Al-Lami told Dinar Opinions that Iraq possesses major gas reserves concentrated in fields such as Mansouriya and Akaz, along with several others currently under active development. “All of these fields are undergoing advanced development operations, and the first stages of actual production are expected to begin during 2026,” he said.
He noted that completing these projects — alongside efforts to end gas flaring from Iraq’s oil fields — will transform the country’s energy profile. “If the current pace continues, Iraq will become one of the main exporters of natural gas in the Middle East within three to four years,” Al-Lami stated.
According to the MP, large-scale gas exports will provide Iraq with greater economic stability and flexibility, reducing dependence on oil revenues that fluctuate with global market conditions. “Investing in Iraq’s gas wealth, which has been wasted for decades through flaring, will help stabilize national income and strengthen the economy,” he added.
