MP: Parliament's failure to elect a president is repeating the 2018 scenario

MP Ahmed Shaheed of the “Good News, Iraq” parliamentary bloc on Thursday voiced strong dissatisfaction with Parliament’s failure to elect a president, confirming that a delegation from the Coordination Framework recently visited the Kurdistan Region to push for a resolution by next Saturday at the latest.

Shaheed told the Information Agency that no agreement has yet been reached on a Kurdish candidate for the presidency, explaining that the delegation’s meetings with leaders of the two main Kurdish parties were aimed at ending internal disputes and preventing a constitutional vacuum.

He said the continued failure of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) to agree on a candidate is negatively affecting Parliament’s performance, noting that disagreements between the two sides remain unresolved.

Shaheed added that the dispute over the Iraqi presidency has now become public and openly confrontational, warning that the situation is heading toward a repeat of the 2018 scenario, when both parties competed for the position with separate candidates.
