The Ministry of Oil said on Thursday that it is now using 86% of the gas from three major oil fields.
Undersecretary for Gas Affairs, Izzat Saber Ismail, said the gas that used to be burned off in the Zubair oil field, Rumaila oil field, and West Qurna/1 oil field is now being captured and used at a rate of 86%. These fields are part of Iraq’s first licensing rounds. He said this is a record achievement for the Basra Gas Company.
He explained that a recent meeting, led by Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Oil Minister Hayyan Abdul-Ghani Al-Sawad, focused on the company’s work. They reviewed past and current projects, as well as future plans to use more associated gas instead of burning it. The goal is simple: reduce gas flaring and make better use of Iraq’s natural resources.
The numbers shared at the meeting were strong. Raw gas capture reached 1,180 million standard cubic feet per day. Dry gas production hit 1,000 million standard cubic feet per day — the highest level the company has ever achieved.
Liquefied gas production reached 7,100 tons per day. Condensate production climbed to 20,000 barrels per day.
These results mean more money for the country and more fuel for power plants. They also help provide cooking gas for homes and fuel for vehicles.
The ministry says it will keep pushing forward. The plan is to use even more associated gas in the future, strengthen Iraq’s energy security, and support the national economy.
