Oil prices stabilize as Middle East events subside

Global oil prices were mostly steady on Monday as tensions in the Middle East began to cool.

Markets reacted calmly after protests in Iran eased and fears of U.S. military action—something that could disrupt oil supplies—started to fade.

Brent crude was trading at $64.19 a barrel early in the day, up just 6 cents, or 0.09%. Meanwhile, U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery rose 9 cents, or 0.15%, to $59.53 a barrel. The more actively traded March contract was slightly lower at $59.39 a barrel.

Overall, oil prices held steady as investors took comfort in the reduced risk of supply disruptions from the region.
