Ahmad al-Harki, a leader in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), said on Saturday that five Kurdish parties are taking part in the parliamentary session to elect Iraq’s president.
He explained that the parties attending include the PUK, the New Generation Movement, the Position Movement, the Islamic Union, and the Change Movement. At the same time, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is still sticking to its boycott and will not attend.
Al-Harki said the session is an important moment for political groups to show they are putting the country first, instead of focusing on party interests.
He also stressed that choosing a president is a key step in moving forward with Iraq’s constitutional process.
However, the ongoing disagreement between the two main Kurdish parties—the KDP and the PUK—continues to delay a final solution, especially with the PUK holding firmly to its own candidate for the role.
