Reduced Gas Supplies Leave 6-6.5GW Generation Gap

Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity has confirmed that imported gas from Iran is continuing at a reduced level of six million cubic metres per day (6 mcm/d), well below contracted volumes.

Official spokesperson Ahmed Mousa Al-Abadi said the shortfall is still affecting generation units and power stations, though milder temperatures have helped ease demand and maintain relative grid stability for now.

The ministry stated that available gas is being prioritized for key load-centre plants, including Bismaya Power Plant and Al-Mansouriya Power Plant. Despite this allocation strategy, reduced flows continue to constrain overall electricity output.

Officials estimate the national grid is currently facing a deficit of approximately 6,000 to 6,500 megawatts across both simple-cycle and combined-cycle operations due to limited gas supplies.

The ministry added that coordination is ongoing with the state gas company to explore increasing import volumes ahead of peak summer demand. It also noted continued cooperation between the electricity and oil sectors to supply alternative fuels to affected generating units in an effort to mitigate further disruptions.
